Why many mothers today are lonely - and what can be done about it.

Care work without breaks, functioning in survival mode, barely any energy for fulfilling relationships: mothers' loneliness is widespread yet often invisible. Sabine Diabaté and Jutta Allmendinger discuss, moderated by Shila Behjat, the causes of this social problem based on the latest research and personal experience - and what can be done at a structural level.

Sabine Diabaté is a sociologist and has headed the research group "Family" at the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB) in Wiesbaden since 2012. For twenty years she has researched partnership and family life.

Jutta Allmendinger is one of Europe's leading experts on educational sociology, labour market research, and gender equality. She studied sociology, social psychology, economics, and statistics at the universities of Mannheim and Wisconsin and earned her doctorate from Harvard University. Since 2007 she has been a professor of educational sociology and labour market research at Humboldt University Berlin.

Shila Behjat is a journalist and author who studied law in Hamburg and Paris and subsequently worked as a correspondent for Great Britain for Axel Springer. Until 2019 she was editor-in-chief of ARTE Magazine; since 2021 she has worked at ARTE as a commissioning editor for culture.
