Fifty years ago, BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST with founder LES HOLROYD from Oldham/Manchester began their musical journey. These perhaps the most subtle representatives of the classic rock genre came together in 1967 and have enchanted audiences ever since with melancholic classic rock and esoteric ethereal sounds. Fans quickly drew comparisons to Moody Blues and Pink Floyd.
The band knew from the start how to deploy the Mellotron's effect apparatus with virtuosity. From the beginning, they experimented with new forms and sounds beyond the classical rock lineup, employing woodwind and brass instruments as well as strings. These captivating sound patterns and orchestral textures became their trademark. As a logical consequence, their debut album was recorded with their own orchestra. Since that debut album in 1970, their success has been unbroken. Bandleader and frontman LES HOLROYD remains, as always, responsible for the band's unmistakable sound and has decisively shaped it. Hits like "Life Is For Living", "Hymn" and many others have long been classics of modern music history.
After the band announced the end of the original BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST in March 1998, LES HOLROYD worked together with Mel Pritchard, also an original band member, on a solo album. "Revolution Days" was released in February 2002 as BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST FEAT. LES HOLROYD. Since then, the five-piece band has toured throughout Europe. In 2016, they released their latest album "Retrospective", which was recorded live at a concert in Germany in 2014.
LES HOLROYD has been and remains a sought-after guest star in successful productions such as "Rock meets Classic" and "Excalibur". There is no doubt - this musical journey is far from over.
