Sophiensæle occupies a building rich in history - told through ceiling decorations, cracks in the walls, drawings on old doors, and the intangible spirits and memories that inhabit the space. The walls, stairwells, and columns also reveal much about how labor has evolved over the building's 120-year existence: stories of emancipation, resistance, democratization, and self-organization, alongside violence, coercion, and exploitation.
Building on the format of the historical house tours regularly offered at Sophiensæle, three Berlin-based artists have created new site-specific performances as festival commissions. The After Work Tours take individual moments suspended between past and present, personal memory and political history, as starting points for artistic explorations of the building - tracing how work shapes bodies, biographies, and ideas.
