In the Footsteps of the Kuhlkerl - Historical Guided Tour

Join the Kuhlkerl or his wife on a walk through Bad Bentheim!

The Kuhlkerl - the name once given to workers in the local sandstone quarries - shares stories of his labour, the hard lives of working families, and the remarkable buildings constructed from Bentheimer Gold, as the local sandstone was known. Your guides will take you on a short journey from the quarry, still visible today, all the way to the historic Batavia Gate.

At each stop along the route, you will learn about Bad Bentheim and the everyday lives of the Kuhlkerls. Sometimes the Kuhlkerl's wife joins the tour too, showing how she supported her husband through the demanding work.
