The setting is an exclusive repository for a species that, in its endless efforts at self-improvement, has simply become redundant. While machines with cool elegance and no small amount of amusement record and comment on human failings, the story's protagonist stumbles through an absurd ballet of self-optimization, heartbreak and desperate searches for the next bio-smoothie.
