Pride and Prejudice* (*or something like that) — Theater tri-bühne, Stuttgart

Five maids tell the story of Lizzy, Darcy, Jane and others in Isobel McArthur's theatrical adaptation - as a wild pop comedy with music, in which five women play eighteen roles. Mrs. Bennet has five daughters, all unmarried. Thanks to inheritance rules devised by wise men, "catching a suitable gentleman" remains the only way to secure the family's existence.

McArthur's new version gives voice to those who are indispensable in the novel but usually go unnoticed. In a tour de force, the five maids embody not only the sarcastic Elizabeth Bennet and the snobbish Mr. Darcy, but nearly the entire cast of the novel. Between slapstick, pop songs and an old-fashioned love story emerges a narrative about female self-determination and economic dependence - strikingly modern yet surprisingly faithful to the original.
