In the late 19th century, two watchmen were stationed in the tower of Fürth's town hall, tasked with raising the alarm whenever fire broke out in the city. They kept watch from a small room above the bell chamber, with a view over the entire town. Everyone knew them - because at Christmas, a lit Christmas tree glowed from their tower room high above the rooftops of Fürth.
