Arum dem Fayer - Klezmer, Yiddish Songs, Stories
Dance and reflective music about life's milestones and celebrations from the Jewish world. Characteristic of Klezmerschicksen is their blend of music from different eras - traditional and contemporary klezmer, and Yiddish songs. Jewish musicians, known as Klezmorim, created in the 16th century in Eastern Europe a unique expressive instrumental style full of joyful and sighing tones, brimming with longing, sorrow, but also humour and zest for life.
Klezmerschicksen present a mix of original and modern klezmer music and songs from various centuries. Beyond traditional klezmer, they perform their own compositions and songs in Yiddish and Hebrew. In medieval Europe, groups of wandering Jewish musicians travelled from town to town, playing at Jewish festivals and special occasions, making klezmer a popular festive music.
Klezmer denotes both a musical style and the musician who plays it. A "Schickse" is a non-Jewish woman - a maid cooking on the Sabbath, a neighbour, sometimes a beloved. Angelika Hykel, Brigitte Ruddigkeit and Sabine Schmidt have been devoted lovers of klezmer music since 1999 and have performed as KLEZMERSCHICKSEN, offering "concerts of a special kind" (Magdeburger Volksstimme).
Klezmer musicians were always expected to play "danceable" music at various celebrations, often alongside non-Jewish musicians. With us, there is also the opportunity to dance at events. Texts by Jewish poets.
