DANCING QUEEN - lautten compagney Berlin & Asya Fateyeva, Saxophone — Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg

You're in the mood for dance, and when you get the chance: you are a dancing queen! Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) and ABBA (1972)

Connecting these two absolute giants of European musical history may seem audacious - Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) and ABBA (1972)! Yet on second listening, countless similarities emerge. The originality and catchiness of their melodies, the rhythmic buoyancy, and the unqualified popularity of both. Under the title "Dancing Queen," Lautten Compagney builds a bridge from the present back to an era when kings, rather than queens, dominated the dance floor. ABBA's music is arranged - as in other cross-epoch projects by the Berlin ensemble - and performed on Baroque instruments, not merely set against Rameau's compositions. The musics sometimes blend so seamlessly that it becomes difficult to tell what came from the pen of the High Baroque French master and what emerged from the workshop of the Swedish pop quartet.

As a true dancing queen on her instrument, the discovery-minded saxophonist Asya Fateyeva dances between worlds. With supreme virtuosity, she draws blazingly fast runs and the most delicate, lyrical arias from her instrument. She commands an endless palette of tonal colors and improvises with ease over a rocky riff, whether from Rameau or ABBA. An ideal partner for the musicians of the experimental and playful Lautten Compagney, with whom she released the acclaimed CD "Time Travel" in 2021, featuring works by Purcell and The Beatles.
