Miroslav Hlaučo: Whitsunday - Memories of the End of the World
Brandenburger Theater, Brandenburg an der Havel, Germany
At the beginning of the 20th century, the remote mountain village of St. George is a place where miracles are everyday occurrences: people speak with saints, walk on water, whistle stones in two. Yet gradually the inhabitants sense that an era of great technological change is approaching, one that will replace their traditional miracles. Odysseus, a native of the village long thought dead, returns and helps the village prepare for the upheavals to come. But turmoil arrives with an administrative inspection in the form of Franz Rechnitz from the capital. While the young Austro-Hungarian notary wants to lead St. George "properly" into the new century, the remaining functioning miracles must be kept secret from him.
Hlaučo plays with motifs of magical realism. With an eye for detail and subtle, sometimes dry humour, he tells a polyphonic story of a world on the threshold of modernity and the grand narratives of the past.
In 2025, twice awarded the Magnesia Literary Prize: "Book of the Year" and "Debut of the Year".
