Arielle the little mermaid is forbidden from swimming to the surface of the sea. But her longing to see the human world is so strong that she defies the ban set by her father Triton, king of the seas. Even her friend Flippi cannot hold her back. When she spots the handsome Prince Eric aboard his ship, she falls head over heels in love. She can only watch helplessly as a fierce storm batters the vessel - then dives in without hesitation to save Eric from certain death.

Her love for Eric is so powerful that she decides to become human so she can stay by his side forever. The wicked sea witch Hydra offers to help, but demands Arielle's beautiful voice in return. Bravely, Arielle trades her fish tail for human legs. She has just three days to receive the kiss of true love from Eric and become human permanently - or she will be lost forever, dissolved into sea foam.

Eric is deeply drawn to Arielle, yet his heart truly belongs to the voice of the one who saved him. Then Hydra appears, claiming she was the one who rescued the prince - but all Eric remembers from the shipwreck is Arielle's enchanting voice... In the end, the two lovers bring the worlds of land and sea into harmony, and the whole story closes with a big celebration of dance and music.
