Between improvisation and electronics
Matthias Vogt (keyboards, electronics)
Maura (vocals)
Joo Kraus (trumpet)
Last year, Matthias Vogt received the City of Rüsselsheim's cultural prize. Shortly after, he hinted at a new project that was still in its early stages. One thing led to another, and the natural conclusion was to offer him - as one of the city's local heroes - the season-opening concert. Known until now mainly as a pianist and bandleader (re:jazz) and as a DJ and remixer, he is now searching for the middle ground between those two poles: bringing improvisation and electronics together under one roof. He surrounded himself with new "machines" and software, stepping into a musical world that was entirely new to him. "It was like learning a new instrument." Originally conceived as a solo project, he expands his setup for Jazz-Fabrik with two notable musical companions. First is vocalist Maura, who has carved out a firm place in the Berlin scene at the intersection of soul and trip-hop. Joining them is trumpeter Joo Kraus - a well-known figure on the German scene who has made his name between jazz and drum'n'bass, often alongside bassist Hellmut Hattler (Tab Two). Whether Matthias Vogt can maintain his signature smooth sound from earlier projects - now with guests and machines in tow - is an open question. Worth finding out.
