Winter is coming. All the field mice work day and night, gathering grain and nuts, wheat and straw - all except Frederick. He collects sunbeams, colours and words as provisions for the cold, grey winter days. The others think he is lazy and wonder what he will eat when winter arrives. Does he care?

Leo Lionni was born in Amsterdam in 1910 and died in Italy in 1999. He was a graphic designer, painter and writer who spent many years in both the USA and Italy. Of his picture books he said: "Of all the things I have done in my life, few have given me as much deep satisfaction as my children's books."
