Mendelssohn's symphony-cantata "Lobgesang" was written for the celebrations marking the 400th anniversary of Johannes Gutenberg's invention of the printing press, held in Leipzig in 1840. The work sits between church and concert hall: symphonic in structure, with vocal parts and biblical texts, but without an oratorio narrative. Its central idea casts the invention of printing as a parallel to the spiritual enlightenment of humanity.

Paired with the Violin Concerto in E minor - one of the most celebrated Romantic solo concertos - the programme brings together two works from the same creative period.
