Mary Lenley has taken up a new post as secretary to the shady lawyer Maurice Messer. Gwenda Milton, her predecessor and sister of the notorious "Ringer", was pulled from the Thames a few months ago - dead. Messer appears to be far from innocent in the matter. Presumed dead, the "Ringer" - a master of disguise - returns to London with revenge on his mind. Scotland Yard and Inspector Wembury have their work cut out, because nobody knows the true face of the "Ringer"!
