Igor Stravinsky - "The Soldier's Tale"

When the devil enters the picture, fairy tales rarely end well. So it goes with Igor Stravinsky, who was living in Swiss exile at the end of World War I when he and poet C. F. Ramuz devised this piece. The story of a deserting soldier, a violin, a sick princess and the devil draws on a Russian folk tale. Since financial hardship was widespread in Switzerland at the time too, composer and author took inspiration from travelling fairground stages and ballad singers, arriving at a pragmatic concept that makes do with just a handful of instruments and performers.

Edvin Revazov, celebrated principal dancer of the Hamburg Ballet, co-founded "Hamburger Kammerballett" in 2022 with Isabelle Rohlfs. The company is a passion project with a social mission: it gives young Ukrainian refugee dancers an artistic home in Hamburg, standing for community and solidarity. Together with the festival ensemble camerata freden and actor Heikko Deutschmann as narrator, the dancers promise a moving evening of ballet in the theatre hall of Gymnasium Alfeld. As part of the 35th International Fredener Musiktage 2026, the jazz ballet "La Revue de Cuisine" by B. Martinu will also be on the programme.

Before the performance, at 5:30 pm, Heikko Deutschmann reads from "Der Tänzer" by C. McKann, a fictional novel about the life of legendary ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev.
