"Viva Sevilla - Guitar Music from Spain and South America"

Flamenco and classical guitar are said to be like two sides of the same mountain, both leading to the same peak. Roger Tristao Adao, a classically trained guitarist, has immersed himself in flamenco playing techniques and built a programme that places the original dances - Sevillanas, Alegrias, Soleares - alongside composed pieces of the same names.

The Spanish composers featured this evening all drew from folk music. Those once-improvised dances found their way into the classical repertoire through arrangements by Isaac Albéniz, Francesco Tárrega, and Enrique Granados - fully composed masterworks that have lost none of the rhythmic drive or raw spirit of flamenco. The programme spans a wide arc, from quiet melancholy to fiery, propulsive rhythms.
