Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Elias
Nikolaikirche, Kiel, Germany

Elias: an angry prophet, yet a man full of doubt. A zealot who calls for killing, and yet a person who shows compassion and kindness. A man entirely devoted to serving his God YHWH. The title character in Felix Mendelssohn's oratorio "Elias" is not a rigid saint, but a character of flesh and blood. Mendelssohn's visionary music, with its depictions of storms, earthquakes, floods, and fire, plunges with full elemental force into this Old Testament story - yet does not forget moments of comfort. This made Elias the unrivaled favorite oratorio of the 19th century.
Together with the Kantorei St. Johannis Lüneburg (preparation: KMD Dr. Ulf Wellner), members of the SanktNikolaiChores Kiel perform Mendelssohn's second oratorio under the direction of KMD Volkmar Zehner. As soloists, the internationally renowned singers Hanna Zumsande, soprano; Anna-Maria Torkel, alto; Stephan Scherpe, tenor; and Henryk Böhm, bass, have been engaged. The Ensemble Schirokko from Hamburg accompanies the choirs and soloists on period instruments from Mendelssohn's era.
