Federico García Lorca (1898-1936) was a Spanish poet and playwright whose work is rooted in Andalusia and its flamenco tradition. In collections such as Romancero gitano he turned images of the moon, death and the southern landscape into symbols of fate and desire. He was shot at the outset of the Spanish Civil War.
