J Dilla (born James Dewitt Yancey, 1974–2006) was an American hip-hop producer and rapper from Detroit, widely regarded as one of the most influential beatmakers in music history. His signature style featured deliberately off-kilter, swinging drum programming and rich, soulful sampling. His posthumous album Donuts (2006) is considered a landmark of instrumental hip-hop.
