In classical music, rhythm long played a subordinate role to the expressiveness of phrasing and linguistic prosody. In the twentieth century, the influence of non-European cultures and the ubiquity of popular culture liberated this musical parameter from constraining dependencies - cultural revolution played its part too, since rhythm is bound to bodily expression and awakens emotions that were once meant to be hidden.

The concert opens NOSPR's chamber season. Živković's Trio per Uno strikes with energy from the opening bars; Steve Reich's Mallet Quartet brings the characteristic interplay of ear and memory typical of minimalist music, as does Mark Ford's Stubernic. In Rosauro's Mitos Brasileiros, mythical figures emerge from the depths of the Amazon jungle, and Andrew Beall's Rancho Jubilee on three percussion boxes closes the programme.
