Piotr Schmidt Quintet ft. Paweł Tomaszewski: Miles Davis 100th Birthday

2026 is an exceptional year for jazz lovers worldwide. It marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Miles Davis – one of the most important figures in 20th-century music history. A trumpeter, composer, visionary, and tireless seeker of new sounds, Davis left behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations of musicians.

For this occasion, Piotr Schmidt – one of Poland's leading jazz trumpeters, composer, producer, and leader of numerous artistic projects, Trumpeter of the Year 2023 and 2025 – has prepared a special concert project dedicated to Miles Davis's music. This is not, however, a classical tribute concert. The programme is conceived as a contemporary perspective on Miles's music, showcasing primarily his electric period and the jazz-rock and jazz-pop sounds of the 1980s. The audience will hear the greatest hits of the 1980s from the legendary trumpeter, but also a composition by Michał Urbaniuk, the only Pole who collaborated with Miles.

For this collaboration, Schmidt has invited outstanding musicians from the top of Poland's jazz scene. Paweł Tomaszewski – an exceptional pianist and keyboardist whose fascination with Miles Davis's electric period is reflected in the rich sonic texture of the concert – plays a special role in the project. The ensemble is completed by Jakub Mizeracki, Marcin Pospieszalski, and Paweł Dobrowolski – artists who have long been creating the most interesting projects in contemporary Polish jazz.

Piotr Schmidt has previously collaborated with Aaron Parks, Mino Cinelu, Walter Smith III, Leszek Możdżer, Adam Bałdych, Michał Barański, and Krzysztof Herdzin, among others, and his original albums regularly appear in year-end charts. The project "Miles Davis – 100th Birthday" is a personal tribute to an artist who had an enormous influence on the development of jazz and contemporary improvised music.
