Aaron Parks and Walter Smith III: Playing the Ballads of and by John Coltrane — Klub Jassmine, Warsaw

2026 marks the centennial of John Coltrane's birth. For this occasion, pianist Aaron Parks and saxophonist Walter Smith III have prepared a joint programme, "Playing the Ballads of and by John Coltrane", dedicated to the lyrical dimension of the legendary saxophonist's work.

In a duo format of piano and tenor saxophone, Parks and Smith draw on Coltrane's compositions and standards to which he gave his own voice. The programme is rounded out by original works by both musicians, created under the influence of his aesthetic. Limiting themselves to two voices allows them to bring out the melody, subtlety and space hidden in these compositions, opening them to new interpretations and spontaneous dialogue.

Aaron Parks gained international recognition as a teenager when he joined Terence Blanchard's ensemble. He has collaborated with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Terri Lyne Carrington and Ambrose Akinmusire, and is also a co-founder of the quartet James Farm. Walter Smith III, as both leader and sideman, has played with Roy Haynes, Terence Blanchard, Christian McBride and Ambrose Akinmusire; his albums for Blue Note Records are highly regarded by critics and audiences alike.
