Maiden Vows

"Maiden Vows" by Aleksander Fredro is a comedy written in 1832, with love as its central theme - the driving force of the plot and the motive behind all the characters' actions. Klara and Aniela, the fiery Gustaw and the sentimental Albin become entangled in amusing intrigues and, after many plot twists, ultimately make happy choices - despite their solemn vows, none of them can resist their feelings.

Fredro draws on the motif of a "love strike" known from the ancient "Lysistrata" by Aristophanes and present in 17th-century Polish literature - in "The Maiden Parliament". A comedy for romantics and those who don't yet know they are.
