The Manuscript Found in Saragossa. The Gomelezes' Legacy
Polski Theatre named after Arnold Szyfman in Warsaw, Poland
Grzegorz Jarzyna turns to the novel by Jan Potocki - a Polish-French traveller, scholar and eccentric from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Shrouded in legend, the book was published in full more than 30 years after the author's death and contains the contradictions of the Enlightenment era: on one hand, it proclaims the power of reason and places the individual at its centre; on the other, it conceals esotericism and secret knowledge beneath the surface of events - with references to Jewish Kabbalah and tarot cards.
Jarzyna comments: "As a society, we have never historically experienced an Enlightenment turn. In the 19th century, we fell into the trap of Romantic messianism, whose consequences are still felt today. Like the people of the Enlightenment, we rejected religion in favour of reason, yet we increasingly feel a metaphysical void. We turn to tarot, horoscopes, Eastern meditation to fill it. The more modern science and technology develop, the stronger the need for spiritual seeking becomes. Our production will be an initiatory tale of a young hero's journey towards self-knowledge and liberation from imposed patterns."
The production is intended for viewers aged 16 and above. It contains intimate scenes, scenes of nudity and scenes of violence. During the performance, strobe lights and artificial smoke are used.
