Horatius
Polski Theatre named after Arnold Szyfman in Warsaw, Poland
Rome and Alba stand on the brink of armed conflict. The politicians decide that instead of a prolonged war, a duel will determine the victor - and two families, bound until now by ties of love and friendship, face each other. A Roman is forbidden to mourn his enemies. But what if the enemy is his sister? Can patriotism and crime go hand in hand, and can love be punished like betrayal?
"Horatius" is a story about how war destroys feelings and ruins people in the name of values identified with state interest. It is a play about politics that overwhelms politicians and pushes them toward ruthless manipulation of citizens.
The production also raises a question about the essence of patriotism: is Horatius a hero? And if he is not - who will decide? Who will judge how much honor is worth in a clash with politics?
