Isaiah Collier - saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, vocalist, educator and activist from Chicago - has long engaged in a creative dialogue with the legacy of John Coltrane. He has collaborated with Chance The Rapper, Angel Bat Dawid, Wadadą Leo Smith and Junius Paul, yet his own projects have earned him international recognition. His breakthrough came with the album Cosmic Transitions, recorded with the band The Chosen Few - the record received five stars from DownBeat magazine and appeared on numerous year-end best-album lists. The material was created in the legendary studio of Rudy Van Gelder on the exact date of John Coltrane's birthday, using some of the same analog equipment on which A Love Supreme was recorded.
"Collier Plays Coltrane" is not a reconstruction or a nostalgic look backward, but a living encounter with Coltrane's ideas - his spirituality, his search for freedom, and his belief in the transformative power of music. Collier draws from the tradition of spiritual jazz, treating it as a starting point for his own explorations.
