Revenge

"Revenge" by Aleksander Fredry - alongside "Maidens' Vows", his most celebrated comedy - has lived in the consciousness of Polish generations for nearly 200 years. Critics called it a "polonaise played in the sound of words", and all agreed on one thing: it is Fredry's most Polish comedy.

A neighbourly dispute between a Chamberlain and a Judge becomes the foundation for exposing human flaws and mocking pettiness, but also an opportunity to remind us why, in the end, reconciliation restores what hatred has destroyed. There is also a love intrigue aimed at young lovers, and the scheming of the ridiculous Papkin and the appetizing Podstolina. A separate motif is the dispute over a castle - a co-protagonist of the comedy, a theme from a pre-Romantic Gothic novel. Its origins trace back to 1764, when English writer Horace Walpole published "The Castle of Otranto", a novel presumably known to Fredry.

The production by the Polish Classical Theatre, directed by Michał Chorosiński, maintains fidelity to the letter of the text and respect for the word. Duration: 1h 30′.
