These two one-act masterpieces of Italian verismo - Mascagni and Leoncavallo - form a classic operatic pairing known to audiences for over a century. This is the third of three German dates on the tour, following earlier performances in Bremen and Hamburg. Aalto-Theater, designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto and opened in 1988, serves as Essen's principal opera house. The building's modernist architecture, regarded as a masterwork, provides an ideal setting for these intense dramatic works.
