Emma-Jean Thackray
Canadian vocalist and composer Emma-Jean Thackray performs at Konzerthaus Dortmund.
Emma-Jean Thackray is an English musician, producer and bandleader from Leeds who moves fluidly between jazz, soul, funk and electronics - playing trumpet, guitar, bass, drums and keyboards, often all on the same record. Her 2021 debut Yellow topped the UK Jazz Albums Chart and won Jazz FM's Album of the Year; her 2025 follow-up Weirdo, a deeply personal record written and recorded almost entirely alone, earned her a Mercury Prize nomination.
Thackray performed at the 2025 Mercury Prize ceremony in Newcastle, where her album Weirdo was among the shortlisted records.
Weirdo was nominated for the 2025 Mercury Music Prize.
Weirdo, Thackray's second studio album, was released on 25 April 2025 via Brownswood Recordings and Parlophone, reaching No. 3 in the UK Jazz and Blues Album Chart.
The album Weirdo was announced in January 2025 alongside its first single 'Wanna Die', with a music video co-directed by Thackray.
Thackray released 'Black Hole', a collaboration with Reggie Watts, as the first preview of her then-upcoming album Weirdo.
