About

Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) was the defining figure of Italian opera in the 19th century, composing 25 operas whose emotional intensity and melodic invention set a standard that has never been surpassed. Works such as Rigoletto, La traviata, Aida and Otello remain the most frequently performed operas on the world's stages. Beyond music, Verdi was a symbol of Italian national identity - his name became a rallying cry during the Risorgimento - and he served briefly as a member of the Italian parliament.
