John Daversa is an American jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger, bandleader, and educator based in Los Angeles, born October 2, 1972. He holds degrees from UCLA, CalArts, and a doctorate from USC, and has served since 2013 as Chair of Studio Music and Jazz at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music. His 2018 album "American Dreamers: Voices of Hope, Music of Freedom" - recorded with 53 young DACA recipients from 17 countries - swept all three of its Grammy nominations at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. Beyond the big band, Daversa performs in small-group and duo settings and plays the rare Electronic Valve Instrument (EVI) alongside trumpet.
Daversa announced the release of "Improvisatory Observatory: Live and Raw at The Baked Potato, Exhibit 4" (Blue Canoe Records) on August 29, 2025, the fourth and final installment of his acclaimed live series.
To mark the Exhibit 4 release, the John Daversa Big Band held a four-night residency at The Baked Potato in Los Angeles over Labor Day weekend, August 28-31, 2025.
"Improvisatory Observatory: Live and Raw at The Baked Potato, Exhibit 3" was released on May 23, 2025 via Blue Canoe Records.
Daversa performed at European venues in July 2025, including Alchemia in Kraków (July 27), Cho-Jazz Workshops (July 28), and the Centrum Kulturalno-Kongresowe Jordanki in Toruń (July 30).
