Luciano - 3 Tenors Celebrate a Legend
Three tenors pay tribute to Luciano Pavarotti at Munich's Prinzregententheater in an evening of great arias and operatic passion.
Luciano Pavarotti (1935-2007) was an Italian operatic tenor from Modena, widely regarded as one of the finest bel canto singers of the 20th century and the best-selling classical recording artist of all time. His career ran from a 1961 debut as Rodolfo in La bohème through a final performance of 'Nessun dorma' at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, with landmark appearances at La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, and outdoor concerts drawing up to 500,000 people. Alongside Plácido Domingo and José Carreras he formed the Three Tenors, whose 1990 debut concert became the best-selling classical album ever recorded. He won five Grammy Awards, two Emmys, and a Kennedy Center Honor, and sold over 100 million records in his lifetime.
Decca and Mercury Studios released 'The Lost Concert: Live from Llangollen (1995)', a previously unreleased recording of Pavarotti performing with the BBC Philharmonic, accompanied by a 100-page collector's book.
Decca released 'Novanta', a 74-track greatest-hits collection spanning Pavarotti's entire career, as the centrepiece of its year-long 90th-birthday tribute campaign.
Teatro alla Scala marked what would have been Pavarotti's 90th birthday with a formal tribute, recalling his presence on the Scala stage from 1965 to 1992.
The Arena di Verona hosted 'Pavarotti 90 - The Man Who Moved the World', a large-scale tribute concert featuring Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Andrea Bocelli, Angela Gheorghiu and many others.
Decca reissued remastered editions of two classic Pavarotti albums - 'The World's Favourite Tenor Arias' (1975) and the 'Mamma' collaboration with Henry Mancini - on CD and vinyl as part of the 90th-anniversary programme.
