Mastodon is an American heavy metal band from Atlanta, Georgia, formed in 2000. Over eight studio albums they built a reputation for technically demanding, genre-crossing music that draws on sludge metal, progressive rock and hard rock - earning a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance ('Sultan's Curse') and multiple Billboard Hard Rock Albums chart-toppers. The band's classic lineup of Troy Sanders, Brent Hinds, Bill Kelliher and Brann Dailor held together for 24 years; Hinds departed in March 2025 and died in a motorcycle accident five months later, a loss that shaped the band's forthcoming ninth album.
