About

The Streets is the British music project of Birmingham-raised rapper, producer and multi-instrumentalist Mike Skinner, active since the early 2000s. The debut album Original Pirate Material (2002) earned a Mercury Prize nomination and is widely credited as a landmark of UK rap; the follow-up A Grand Don't Come for Free (2004) went multi-platinum and produced the UK number-one single 'Dry Your Eyes'. Skinner's writing - rooted in UK garage and grime but shaped by the textures of working-class suburban life - made The Streets one of the most influential acts in British music history. After disbanding in 2011, Skinner revived the project in 2017 and released the sixth album The Darker the Shadow the Brighter the Light in 2023, accompanied by a feature film he wrote, directed and scored himself.
