Sofia Andruchowytsch (b. 1982) and her father Jurij Andruchowytsch (b. 1960) are among the most prominent voices of contemporary Ukrainian literature. She was awarded the International Hermann Hesse Prize in 2024, and he received the Heinrich Heine Prize of the City of Düsseldorf in 2022. In conversation with Jan Bürger, both address the question of how to continue writing when one's own country is forced into war - and how the role of literature changes in such circumstances.
The nationwide event series "Literary Self-Defence" examines how threatening situations are perceived and portrayed across literary texts from different eras. Following events in Frankfurt am Main and Potsdam, further events are planned in Weimar, Marbach, and Munich.
