Doshi Retreat (DE)
Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein, Germany
Every first Sunday of the month and on public holidays, 4 pm, Vitra Design Museum
The remarkable ensemble on the Vitra Campus gains an extraordinary architectural addition with the Doshi Retreat: a contemplative sanctuary conceived as a peaceful space for stillness and reflection. This striking project by Balkrishna Doshi, developed in close collaboration with his granddaughter Khushnu Panthaki Hoof and Sönke Hoof, fits seamlessly into the vision of the Vitra Campus as a biosphere.
The Doshi Retreat dissolves the boundaries between architecture, art and spiritual design. Laid out as a winding path, it takes visitors on a transformative journey: underground, along walls that resonate with sound. Khushnu Panthaki Hoof explains: "This architecture grew from Doshi's dream of two intertwining cobras."
The project offers practical inspiration for a more sustainable approach to building: the walls are made from innovative XCarb® low-carbon steel, which develops a warm patina through controlled corrosion. The partially open ceiling, featuring a hand-hammered brass mandala from India, draws in light and air.
