Bamberger Symphoniker

Alan Gilbert, an American conductor and GRAMMY Award winner, leads the Bamberg Symphony. He studied at Harvard University, the Curtis Institute of Music, and Juilliard School under Otto-Werner Müller, winning the Georg Solti Prize in 1994. Since autumn 2019, he has been chief conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra Hamburg, with his contract extended through the 2028/29 season. He also serves as chief conductor of the Royal Swedish Opera Stockholm (until 2029) and honorary conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Stockholm. As a guest conductor, he regularly works with the Berlin Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, and Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig. As an opera conductor, he has led productions at the Metropolitan Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Zurich Opera, and Santa Fe Opera, where he served as the first music director. From 2011 to 2018, he taught conducting and orchestration at Juilliard School and held the William Schuman Chair for Musicology.

Soloist Inon Barnatan, born in Tel Aviv in 1979, is one of the most prominent pianists of his generation. He performs Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 25 in E-flat major, K. 503.

The second part of the programme features Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10 - a central work of Russian post-war music - with Alan Gilbert and the Bamberg Symphony.
