Club der toten Dichter - Galgenlieder - Christian Morgenstern Newly Composed
Stadttheater Peiner Festsäle, Germany
Morgenstern himself wrote that "Galgenpoesie" is a piece of worldview - when you look at the world from the gallows, you see it differently. With the Galgenlieder, he wanted to "spread a little spiritual lightness, cheerfulness, freedom, enliven the imagination, just a little to thaw out the frozen music of the soul in the posthorn". Marcel Reich-Ranicki, fifty years later, included all the Galgenlieder in his canon of German-language poetry.
For this anniversary project with new compositions, the actor Hans-Werner Meyer was brought on board (known from "Letzte Spur Berlin" and "Baader Meinhof Komplex", among others), who also plays violin during performances. Bassist Markus Runzheimer (Element of Crime) additionally takes on percussion, and Reinhardt Repke plays guitar and has newly composed the poems.
The programme includes poems such as "Der Lattenzaun", "Sophie, die Henkersmaid", "Das Mondschaf", and "Der Werwolf". Tucholsky put it perfectly: "You laugh yourself silly, then admire it, grown more serious, a deep lyric that only in the last moment turns into a joke - and at the end you realize that you have learned a philosophical sentence".
