Molière - The Imaginary Dead Man
Burg Wertheim, Germany
A comedy in the manner of Molière by Nona Fernández
In theatre, nobody really dies. But what if someone does? Molière stands dead on stage, convinced he is still alive. A Molière-style comedy about Molière himself.
When the curtain falls, all the dead rise for their curtain call. Yet theatre legend has it that Molière actually died on stage during a performance.
Nona Fernández has built a comedy around this anecdote. Playing the imaginary invalid, Molière feigns death - but when the moment comes to get up, nothing happens. He is truly dead. Moments later, Molière awakens as a living corpse, refusing to believe he has died. When a scheming patron tries to take over his theatre company, Molière's ghost fights back by every means at his disposal.
A play that has everything a Molière comedy is known for: the human and all-too-human, deception, and slapstick.
