Christmas Oratorio 2026 - Christmas Oratorio in Augsburg Cantatas: IV-VI

The Christmas Oratorio tells the story of Jesus's birth in an epochal work combining voices and orchestra. "Jauchzet frohlocket" - what joy this birth brings to humanity, the angels proclaim, and the shepherds who hear the message and see the Saviour praise in moving music the Child who brings peace to the world.

In Cantatas IV-VI the sound becomes contrasting. The Three Kings wish to visit Jesus, but they have not reckoned with Herod, who sends them on a false trail. Cantatas IV-VI span a festive arc between the mighty breath of the enemy and intimate solos, before light overcomes darkness and the choir voices break into a moving "Fallt mit Danken".
