Long, long ago, dragons lived and protected the world from the icy cold with the warmth of their fire. But over time, ice began destroying all life. Arktos, a terrible snowman, is determined to cover the world in ice. The old dragon Tyrion wants to prepare his young son Tabaluga for his destined mission - to protect the world. But first, Tabaluga must find the True Fire, for only then can he stop Arktos and his schemes.

Tabaluga sets out on his journey with the help of a magician. Along the way, he faces many dangers, such as the spider woman Tarantula, but also discovers beautiful things. He learns that the world, with all its good and evil, is wonderful and worth saving. Yet Arktos refuses to let Tabaluga fulfill his destiny. He creates from pure ice a beautiful being - the girl Lilli, whose only purpose is to distract Tabaluga from his search for the True Fire.

Tabaluga falls in love with Lilli, just as Arktos planned. But through love, Tabaluga discovers a great and beautiful power - the power of love itself.
