Starting at the Fischmarkt, you follow the trail of flood protection along the Elbe: past dykes, storm surge barriers and hidden flood defences. Along the way you learn why flooding in Hamburg works differently from inland areas, and how wind, the North Sea and tides shape events. Historic moments such as the 1962 storm surge show how disasters forged the city's modern defences - and how today's warning systems and urban planning build on those lessons.
