Hans Kammerlander takes you into the world of high-altitude mountaineering in his experience lecture "Bergsüchtig". Alongside the main talk, there is a supporting programme and a gripping presentation built around one theme: climbing and descending in the death zone.
Kammerlander shares countless adventures, triumphs and setbacks, moments of joy and human tragedy. The lecture "Bergsüchtig - nach Wänden, Graten und Gipfeln" opens with a short biography. Born the sixth child of a mountain farming family in Ahornach in northern South Tyrol, Hans Kammerlander dreamed from an early age of the three great north faces of the Alps - the Matterhorn, the Eiger and the Grandes Jorasses. He completed all of them while still a young climber, and his exceptional talent was quickly noticed in the alpine community.
Years later, Kammerlander climbed the Matterhorn within 24 hours, traversing all four ridges on the way up and back down. Once he had ticked the three north-face classics, the Alps offered little that could match them. The highest peaks of the Himalayas and Karakoram beckoned. An invitation from Reinhold Messner to climb the eight-thousander Cho Oyu in 1982 arrived at just the right moment. Since then, Hans Kammerlander has been "bergsüchtig" - addicted to mountains - travelling to every corner of the globe.
Kammerlander ranks among the most accomplished high-altitude mountaineers of his generation. Before he could stand on thirteen of the world's fourteen highest peaks, however, this exceptional South Tyrolean alpinist had a long road to travel.
