For over 30 years, the Junge Philharmonie Köln has welcomed the new year with a programme that blends lightness and warmth, drawing on the rich repertoire of the Strauss dynasty and their contemporaries.

The orchestra has built a distinctive platform that gives young professionals the increasingly rare chance to take part in exceptional concert projects beyond the confines of their studies and careers. It is run by a registered non-profit association whose mission is to make the orchestra a musical ambassador for a peaceful world - achieved in part by bringing together many young international artists living in Germany.

Anyone who has attended a New Year's concert by the Junge Philharmonie Köln knows that on this day the lighter muse holds sway, guided with wit and humour by chief conductor Volker Hartung.

The programme features masterworks by Emile Waldteufel - including "The Skaters" - and Jacques Offenbach's overture to "Orpheus in the Underworld", alongside Carlos Gardel's tango "Una Cabeza", waltzes by Johann Strauss Jr. (including the overture to "Die Fledermaus" and the Lucifer Polka), and works by Georges Bizet, Niccolò Paganini, and Pablo de Sarasate - all performed by the orchestra's young virtuosos.
