Two English gentlemen lead elaborate double lives: Jack, who lives in the country, becomes "Ernest" in the city - Algernon, a confirmed city-dweller, invents a sickly friend called "Bunbury" to escape unwanted social obligations. But when both fall in love, under the false name "Ernest", with two ladies who insist on marrying a man of precisely that name, their elegant deception spirals out of control.
What follows is a farcical game of mix-ups and misunderstandings. Secrets burst, identities collapse, hearts stumble - and in the end it turns out: nothing is quite so dangerous... as the wrong name with the right person.
