Long Island, 1922: every evening, New York's high society gathers at the lavish estate of young millionaire Jay Gatsby in search of amusement. Yet the mysterious host himself has no interest in these extravagant parties. Behind his dazzling exterior he conceals a deep longing for the one woman who remains beyond his reach - a longing that grows into obsession.

Blending live illustration, literary readings and music, the artist and his ensemble - dressed in period-perfect glamour - take us into the legendary love story first published in 1925. Actor Ari Nadkarni delivers expressive, engaging readings from the novel, while Nippoldt draws live before the audience - scenes and faces emerging slowly from lines, brushstrokes and dots, captured by camera and projected large. Singer Lotta Stein and pianist Philip Ritter perform songs of the "Roaring Twenties", completing the time-travel: jazz, Charleston steps, golden glitter.

An entertaining evening that brings back the glamour and decadence - and the longing and tragedy - of arguably the most famous novel of the 1920s.
