Winter is coming. All the field mice work day and night, gathering grain and nuts, wheat and straw. All except Frederick. He collects sunbeams, colours and words - his own kind of provisions for the cold, grey, long winter days. But this puts him at odds with the others. They think he is lazy and wonder what he will eat when winter arrives. Will he let that bother him?
"The wonder I feel when I lie in the grass and observe a vast world in miniature - where blades of grass are giant sequoias and a beetle is a charging rhinoceros - is the same as it was when I was a little boy." - Leo Lionni
LEO LIONNI was born in Amsterdam in 1910 and died in Italy in 1999. He was an American graphic designer, painter and writer who spent many years living in Italy. From childhood, Leo Lionni loved nature, and his observations found their way into his picture books, of which he said: "Of all the things I have done in my life, few have given me as much deep satisfaction as my children's books."
