This city walk through Hamburg traces how the city has lived with storm surges for centuries - and how it is preparing for the future.

Starting at the Fischmarkt, you follow the flood defences along the Elbe: dykes, tidal barriers and hidden protective structures. Along the way you learn why flooding in Hamburg works differently from inland flooding, what role wind, the North Sea and tides play, and how the 1962 storm surge shaped the city's modern flood protection. The tour closes with a look at today's warning systems, flood management and urban planning.
