The Nikolaikirche is one of Leipzig's oldest and most significant churches, dating back to the 12th century. Its interior was remodelled in a striking late-Baroque and early-Neoclassical style in the 18th century, featuring the famous palm-column nave. The church became historically prominent as the starting point of the Monday Demonstrations in 1989, which played a key role in the peaceful revolution that led to German reunification.
